To safely move your car away from the roadside, establishing a consistent routine is essential. We recommend the P-O-M method, which stands for Prepare, Observe, and Move.
Prepare
Preparation is key before checking for safety. Start by :
· ensuring the engine is running
· press the clutch down
· select first gear
· give the engine a slight rev while keeping your feet steady.
Observations
Next, thorough observations are crucial. According to the DVSA, you must check your surroundings to ensure it’s safe to proceed. This includes:
· looking over your left shoulder
· checking the left door mirror
· the interior mirror
· the right door mirror
· and finally over your right shoulder.
Once you’ve completed these checks, signal to the right and prepare to move.
Manoeuvre
When it’s time to move off, do so in a controlled manner by:
· releasing the handbrake
· gently lifting the clutch to the bite point
· and holding it steady as the car begins to move.
· As you steer right to clear the kerb, make sure to counter-steer slightly before straightening the wheel.
· Once you gain speed, fully release the clutch and remember to cancel your indicator.
