Roundabout Rules Every Learner Should Know
Before you even start driving through a roundabout, it helps to know the basic rules—these are the things your instructor will teach you and what the driving examiner will expect you to understand on your test.
Here are the key rules to remember:
- Give way to the right – You must let any traffic already on the roundabout (coming from your right) go first, unless signs or road markings say otherwise.
- Stay in the correct lane – Your position on the road depends on where you’re going. For example, left lane for turning left or straight, middle or right lane for going straight or turning right—this can vary, so always look at signs and arrows on the road.
- Use your indicators – Signal left just after you pass the exit before the one you’re taking. This lets other road users know you’re coming off.
- Keep your speed low – Roundabouts aren’t for rushing. Slowing down gives you more time to think and keeps things safer.
It might sound like a lot at first, but once you’ve been through a few roundabouts with your instructor, it’ll all start to make sense. Every learner starts where you are now—confused at first, but confident with time.
