Choosing the Correct Lane at a Roundabout
One of the trickiest things for new drivers is knowing which lane to use at a roundabout. The lane you choose depends on where you’re going—and sometimes the layout changes from one roundabout to another. That’s why it’s important to always look for road signs and lane markings as you approach.
Here’s a simple guide to get you started:
- First exit (left turn) – Use the left-hand lane and signal left as you approach.
- Second exit (straight ahead) – Usually the left or middle lane, and you normally don’t signal until after you pass the first exit.
- Third exit or beyond (right turn or going all the way around) – Use the right-hand lane, signal right as you approach, and then switch to a left signal just before your exit.
Some larger roundabouts will have arrows painted on the road to show which lane goes where—these are really helpful, so keep an eye out for them. And if you’re ever unsure, it’s okay to ask your instructor or even circle the roundabout again (safely) rather than making a rushed decision.
Learning the right lane choice takes a bit of practice, but with a calm approach and a bit of guidance, you’ll get the hang of it quickly.
